Canadian Gymnaestrada 2022 Declared a True Sport Event
Ottawa, ON (June 15, 2022) – Gymnastics Canada (GymCan) and the Alberta Gymnastics Federation (AGF) are excited to declare Canadian Gymnaestrada 2022 a True Sport Event! From June 30 to July 5, the city of Edmonton will play host to the performance-based event which is held every four years to celebrate gymnastics in a non-competitive environment.
The True Sport declaration comes as the true essence of “Gymnastics for All” aligns naturally with the True Sport Principles. True Sport experiences are those based on the values of fairness, excellence, inclusion, and fun. GymCan and the AGF believe Canadian Gymnaestrada reflects these shared values and are committed to activating the True Sport Principles during the event to ensure the benefits of good sport are realized. When the True Sport Principles, “Go For It, Play Fair, Respect Others, Keep It Fun, Stay Healthy, Include Everyone, and Give Back,” are activated in sport environments it leads to a good sport culture, which instills character in participants, strengthens communities, and increases opportunities for excellence.
As part of this commitment, the event will include True Sport oaths for athletes, coaches, volunteers, and adjudicators to publicly pledge their commitment to True Sport. In addition, True Sport athlete, coach, and manager workshops will be held (details to be confirmed) to encourage participants to foster positive lifelong experiences and unite them around a common belief that good sport can make a great difference.
“Gymnastics Canada and the True Sport program are well aligned in our perspectives on sport, community, and health,” said Ian Moss, CEO of Gymnastics Canada. “We see Canadian Gymnaestrada as the perfect platform to promote our collective objective.”
GymCan and AGF encourage gymnasts across Canada to join True Sport, and for those attending the event to share moments that reflect True Sport on social media using #TrueSportMoments. This year’s Canadian Gymnaestrada theme is #ConnectingThroughMovement, so let’s make the connection meaningful in the spirit of the True Sport Principles.
“We are thrilled that GymCan and AGF have declared the Canadian Gymnaestrada 2022 a True Sport event,” says Karri Dawson, Executive Director, Values-Based Sport at the Canadian Centre for Ethics in Sport. “This commitment to True Sport ensures that gymnasts at all levels can benefit from values-based sport and will enhance the celebratory and inclusive nature of the event.”
