Dominique Pegg upsets defending champion at Elite Canada women's gymnastics meet
Posted Friday, December 11, 2009

OAKVILLE, Ont., -- Dominique Pegg of Sarnia, Ont., upset defending all around champion Brittany Rogers of Coquitlam, B.C. to claim her first major senior title at the Elite Canada women’s gymnastics meet on Friday in Oakville, Ont.

Pegg, 15, didn’t win any of the four events, but earned the victory with her overall consistency, placing in the top five on vault, floor ad uneven bars.

Pegg topped the field with a score of 54.60, followed by Kristina Vaculik of Oshawa with 52.950 points and Charlotte Mackie of Coquitlam, B.C. at 52.900.

“I didn’t come here expecting to win, so this comes as a bit of a surprise,” said Pegg, who placed third all around at the Canadian championships in June and fourth last year at Elite Canada.

Pegg, who helped Canada win a silver medal in the team event last month at the junior Pan Am championships in Brazil, notched her best result on vault, placing second.

Rogers, the defending Elite Canada champion, came into the meet as the favourite after scoring Canada’s best results at the world championships in October but struggled on most events and had to settle for fourth all around.

Despite her difficulties, Rogers topped the field in the vault competition, and qualified for three event finals.

“Brittany tried her best, but the problem is that she’s very tired after training so hard to prepare for the world championships,” said Vladimir Lashin, head coach of the women’s national team.

“She has a day off before the event finals and will be ready to compete again.”

Lashin said he was pleased to see the high calibre of competition at this year’s meet, including the return to form of Vaculik, who was competing for the first time in more than a year after just missing out on a spot at the Beijing Olympics.

“Kristina showed she’s ready to compete again at a high level,” said Lashin.

Vaculik’s best result was a second place on floor behind winner Anysia Unick of Calgary.

Competition continues Saturday with junior and novice events.
