Gymnastics Canada restates commitment to Safe Sport

OTTAWA, ON (December 7, 2017) – Gymnastics Canada has suspended Mr. Michel Arsenault, a member coach of Gymnastics Alberta, following the serious allegations that have recently come forward.

Gymnastics Canada restates commitment to Safe Sport

“Our hearts go out to everyone affected by this situation, in particular the athletes and their families,” said Richard Crépin, Chair of the Board of Directors for Gymnastics Canada. “No athlete should be subject to this type of conduct and we are working tirelessly to ensure that all of our participants are able to take part in our sport in a safe and welcoming environment.”

“Gymnastics Canada is committed to providing a safe environment for our sport,” said Peter Nicol, President/CEO of Gymnastics Canada. “We take the safety and well-being of our participants seriously and it is a high priority for our organization.”

In January 2017, as part of our risk management approach, and following the direction of the Coaching Association of Canada’s Responsible Coaching Movement, Gymnastics Canada implemented additional requirements for all national team participants including enhanced background checks and training on ethical behaviour (Respect in Sport).

Currently, policies are in place for the screening of employees, coaches, judges, support staff, and volunteers that travel and work with the athletes in our sport, however, we continue to review and update our policies and procedures to ensure that they meet our commitment to safe sport and minimize risks to our participants. In October 2017, a full review of our current policies and procedures document was completed and we are now working in close collaboration with our provincial partners to develop updated policies and to ensure alignment in key areas such as background screening, conduct, and the development of a safe sport framework.
