Gymnastics Canada staff adjustments due to the impact of the COVID-19 lockdown and club closures across the country

OTTAWA, ON (May 8, 2020) – The Gymnastics Canada (GymCan) Board of Directors recognize the significant impact of the COVID-19 lockdown on the lives and livelihood of so many in our gymnastics community across the country. While it is encouraging to see strong signs of re-opening procedures being put in place for all sectors of society, we must acknowledge that the impact of this pandemic will be felt for years to come not only in the sport of gymnastics but across our collective communities.

As a response to the significant reductions in revenue predicted within our sport, the GymCan Board of Directors has approved a plan to significantly reduce national office staff on a temporary basis – the reductions impact 70% of the current staffing allotment. As such, GymCan will move forward with a small staff to manage day-to-day affairs until such time that there is more clarity on the fiscal and member service requirements coming from the gradual re-opening of clubs across the country.

“There is no certainty whatsoever in our current revenue predictions for this fiscal year but the Board has a requirement to be prudent in its risk management approach,” said Ian Moss, CEO of Gymnastics Canada. “As such, a temporary staffing adjustment is part of the solution to ensure that GymCan remains solvent and can rebuild its membership service commitment once this lockdown has passed.”

The Board recognizes the short-term impact that such a significant staffing reduction will have on member service levels – the GymCan CEO will work with our Provincial/Territorial counterparts to manage expectations and programming as best possible during this time. We thank all members in advance for their understanding and we look forward to providing renewed leadership and programming to the gymnastics community once again in the near future.
